During the cold and flu season, we all know to stay away from people who are coughing and girl_sneezingsneezing, and we know to wash our hands frequently. But, did you know that specific cleaning techniques can also slow the spread of the flu?

To help your family and co-workers avoid the flu, incorporate the following techniques we use at CinLee Cleaning into your cleaning routine:

Cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing
Did you know there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting? Cleaning with soap and water removes germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces or objects, but it does not necessarily kill germs. Disinfecting with chemicals kills germs on surfaces but does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces. Sanitizing, which involves both cleaning and disinfecting, is the best method for killing germs.

Sanitize heavily used objects often
Items that are touched more often, such as desks, doorknobs, computer keyboards, faucet handles and phones should be sanitized daily to reduce the spread of germs. As an extra precaution, wear gloves to sanitize heavily soiled areas like bathrooms.

Routine cleaning and disinfecting is enough
It’s important to match your cleaning and disinfecting activities to the types of germs you want to remove or kill. Most studies show that flu viruses are relatively fragile, so standard cleaning and disinfecting practices are sufficient to remove or kill them. Because flu germs are relatively easy to kill, additional methods like wiping down walls and ceilings and using air deodorizers are not necessary or recommended.

Follow label directions
Always follow the directions printed on cleaning products and disinfectants. This generally includes washing surfaces with a general household cleaner, rinsing with water and following with an EPA approved disinfectant to kill germs.

If an EPA approved disinfectant is not available, use the following chlorine bleach solution:
• Add 1 tablespoon of bleach to 4 cups of water.

Sanitize Safely
Cleaning products and disinfectants contain harsh chemicals. These products should be handled with gloves and eye protection. Do not mix cleaners and disinfectants unless the labels indicate it is safe to do so. Combining certain products (such as chlorine bleach and ammonia cleaners) can result in serious injury.

Handle waste properly
After sanitizing an area, be sure to throw away disposable items used to clean surfaces immediately. When emptying trash cans, avoid touching used tissues and other waste. Wash your hands with soap and water immediately after emptying waste baskets, touching used tissues and similar waste, and after sanitizing.
By taking these simple steps, you can help your family, friends and co-workers avoid the flu this season. If you need help sanitizing your home or business in Columbus Indiana, contact CinLee Cleaning today at 812-350-8721 or info@cinleecleaning.com
